That's the Power of One.
Many shippers have heard of intermodal freight but aren't sure it fits their lanes. For many lanes, intermodal transportation commonly matches over‑the‑road transit performance while providing meaningful cost advantages.
Averitt's intermodal team manages the entire move door to door, from pickup at your dock through drayage, rail, and final delivery. Your freight is sealed at origin and stays on that same container until it reaches the consignee. No transloading. No surprises.
Intermodal transportation is worth evaluating if any of these apply to your operation:
If you're unsure whether a specific lane qualifies, send it to our intermodal team. We can review your freight profile and identify where intermodal delivers the strongest cost and capacity advantage.
A drayage carrier arrives at your dock with a 53-foot container or Averitt trailer. From there, Averitt manages the entire move:
Trailer On Flatcar (TOFC) An Averitt trailer is loaded at your dock and placed directly onto the flatcar. TOFC capabilities extend our network reach by providing Averitt trailers that move seamlessly from pickup through delivery, remaining in the same trailer with no rehandling at any point.
Container On Flatcar (COFC) A 53-foot rail container arrives at your dock just like a standard trailer. Averitt coordinates drayage to the ramp and manages the full move through delivery. With access to 150,000+ intermodal containers, we can support both spot and contractual freight needs.
Intermodal isn't limited to full truckload moves. Averitt can consolidate LTL freight at origin, move it by rail as a single container, and deliver individual shipments through our distribution network; or through partner carriers outside our footprint.
A pool distribution strategy can reduce per-shipment costs significantly on lanes where LTL rates are high and freight moves on a predictable schedule. Send us a list of your LTL lanes and we'll show you where intermodal pool distribution creates an advantage.
Transit times are predictable and consistent, often times matching over the road transit times. Reach out to our Intermodal team to confirm transit times.
No. Freight is sealed at your dock and delivered on that same container. It is never transferred to a different container during transit.
Drayage to the ramp can cover up to 200 miles, so proximity to a ramp is rarely a barrier. Averitt handles all drayage coordination as part of the door-to-door service.
Shipments receive multiple updates per day, visible through Averitt's standard tracking tools. Individual shipments within a consolidated load are tracked separately.
All intermodal loads are covered up to $100,000 automatically. Additional coverage is available for higher-value freight.

As an approved Intermodal Marketing Company (IMC), Averitt partners with all major North American railroads -- giving shippers access to every major rail market across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
