From Coffee to Commerce: How Port NOLA Moves Global Trade

Most of us don't think about port infrastructure when we pour a morning cup of coffee. But before those beans ever reach a grocery store shelf or kitchen cabinet, they may have traveled thousands of miles by truck and vessel, passed through a U.S. port, and moved through a network of warehouses, distribution centers and transportation providers.

For a significant amount of America's coffee, that journey runs through New Orleans.

On a recent episode of Averitt's Beyond Point to Point podcast, Amanda Coates, Vice President of Cargo Development at the Port of New Orleans, joined host Joe Greek to discuss how Port NOLA connects global commerce with businesses and consumers throughout the United States.

The conversation began with coffee, but quickly expanded into a much larger story about global trade, multimodal transportation, infrastructure investment and the importance of building more resilient supply chains.

Why is the Port of New Orleans important to global trade?

Port NOLA is a deepwater port located along the Mississippi River near the Gulf of Mexico, giving shippers connections between international ocean trade and inland markets by river, rail and road. Port NOLA says its gateway provides access to more than 30 major inland hubs through 14,500 miles of waterways, six Class I railroads and interstate highways. That combination is what makes New Orleans more than a point where cargo is loaded or unloaded.

A port handles the transfer between land and water, but the supply chain continues long after the vessel sails or a container reaches the dock. Cargo may need to move to a warehouse, be transloaded from an ocean container into a domestic trailer, connect with rail, travel by truck or move by barge before ultimately reaching a manufacturer, distribution center, store or consumer.

As Coates explained during the podcast, New Orleans sits at the front door of that much larger system.

And few products illustrate that system better than coffee.

How does coffee move through Port NOLA?

Coates shared that Port NOLA handles roughly 15,000 TEUs of imported coffee and approximately 700 million pounds of coffee annually.

The beans begin their journey in coffee-producing regions around the world, including Central America, South America, Vietnam and parts of Africa. After processing near their origin, they are transported to a port, loaded into containers and shipped aboard ocean vessels bound for New Orleans.

After arriving at Port NOLA, the coffee can move by truck to local facilities where it is cleaned, graded and blended before continuing to roasting, grinding, packaging and distribution operations.

It's an example of how many different organizations and modes of transportation can touch a product before it reaches the consumer.

Port NOLA continues to identify coffee as one of the major commodities moving through its facilities, along with products such as plastics, consumer merchandise, steel, non-ferrous metals, rubber, wood and paper. Explore Port NOLA's cargo-handling capabilities.

Coffee may be one of New Orleans' best-known imports, but the port's cargo mix extends far beyond what goes into a morning cup.

What types of cargo move through Port NOLA?

During the conversation, Coates described a diverse mix of imports that includes natural rubber, steel, metals, machinery, lumber, furniture, granite and other products.

Exports tell another side of the story. Louisiana's industrial base produces chemicals, resins, lubricants and other commodities that move through the region on their way to international markets.

Port NOLA's location also makes the gateway important for project cargo and oversized industrial equipment.

Before a new manufacturing plant or data center begins operating, enormous pieces of infrastructure may need to reach the site. Transformers, generators and specialized machinery can arrive from overseas and then move inland by barge, rail or truck.

That capability is becoming increasingly important as investment in power infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and data centers drives demand for the movement of unusually large and heavy equipment. In May 2026, Port NOLA and the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad announced a new technology partnership focused specifically on improving how oversized cargo is planned and routed through the rail network. For shippers, the important point is that the port is only one part of the journey. The ability to efficiently connect vessel, river, rail, road and warehousing can be just as important as the ocean voyage itself.

How does Port NOLA connect ocean cargo to inland markets?

One of New Orleans' biggest logistics advantages is its rail connectivity.

The New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB) is a Class III switching railroad aligned with Port NOLA that connects the New Orleans gateway with all six Class I railroads serving the market: BNSF, CN, CSX, CPKC, Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific. That connectivity gives shippers choices.

A container arriving by vessel could continue inland by rail. Cargo could be picked up by truck and delivered directly to its destination. Freight could move to a nearby facility for transloading before continuing in a 53-foot domestic trailer. Certain commodities and oversized shipments can also use the Mississippi River system to move inland by barge.

This is where multimodal logistics becomes more than an industry buzzword.

The value comes from having options and being able to choose the mode, or combination of modes, that makes sense for a particular shipment.

For freight moving long distances inland, for example, Averitt intermodal transportation services can combine rail efficiency with truck pickup and delivery. Cargo requiring a change in equipment can move through a container transload operation before continuing toward its final destination.

That flexibility becomes even more valuable when conditions change.

How can multimodal transportation improve supply chain resiliency?

One of Coates' strongest messages to importers and exporters was the importance of planning for disruption before disruption occurs.

“You have to be planning for supply chain resiliency constantly because once it's a crisis, it's a crisis.”

Weather events, capacity constraints, congestion, infrastructure issues and changes in transportation markets can all affect how freight moves.

No port or transportation mode is immune to disruption. The Gulf Coast must prepare for hurricanes and fog. Other regions face their own seasonal and infrastructure challenges.

The goal isn't to identify a route that can never be disrupted.

It's to create optionality.

A supply chain that can shift between ports, modes, facilities or inland transportation strategies may be better positioned to react when the original plan becomes difficult or unavailable.

For importers considering a Gulf Coast strategy, that could mean evaluating how New Orleans fits alongside other gateways rather than viewing port selection as an all-or-nothing decision.

What is the Louisiana International Terminal?

Port NOLA is also preparing for how global shipping may evolve in the decades ahead.

One challenge is vessel size.

The existing Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal is located upriver from the Crescent City Connection. As container vessels have grown larger, the bridge's air-draft restriction has become an important consideration for the port's long-term container strategy.

The proposed Louisiana International Terminal in Violet, Louisiana, would be located downriver of the bridge, eliminating that height restriction while providing naturally deep water and connections to rail, road and river transportation.

Port NOLA's project site says the terminal is being developed to accommodate vessels of all sizes and connect with six Class I railroads, four interstate systems and 14,500 miles of inland waterways.

Coates described approximately 1,200 acres at the site, with the terminal itself planned for roughly 400 acres and additional property available to support logistics activities such as warehousing, transloading and other maritime-related operations.

For shippers, the significance goes beyond adding another terminal. The project represents a long-term investment in the infrastructure needed to connect larger vessels with inland U.S. markets and the logistics services that surround them.

What happens after cargo leaves Port NOLA?

A vessel reaching the dock isn't the end of an international shipment.

In many ways, it's the beginning of a second supply chain.

Containers need to leave the terminal. Products may require transloading, storage, processing or distribution. Inland transportation has to be coordinated. Equipment needs to be available. And every handoff creates another opportunity for delay or added cost.

Coates described trucking companies and warehousing providers as critical “arteries” connecting Port NOLA with the broader supply chain.

“Take another look at New Orleans.”

It's a useful takeaway.

Port NOLA combines an established international gateway with access to the Mississippi River, six Class I railroads, interstate transportation, industrial real estate and a growing ecosystem of warehousing, transloading and logistics providers. At the same time, investments such as the Louisiana International Terminal are aimed at expanding what the gateway can support in the future.

For shippers evaluating their routing strategies, the question doesn't necessarily have to be whether New Orleans should replace another port.

A better question may be:

Could New Orleans give our supply chain another option?

In an environment where resiliency increasingly depends on flexibility, that may be the more important question.
