As the only alcohol legally designated as a product of the U.S. by the Senate Concurrent Resolution 19 of 1964, it’s no wonder bourbon has profoundly shaped the taste palette across both the nation and the world. With 95% of the world's bourbon made in Kentucky, the state is known as an epicenter for spirits production.
In the past few years, the bourbon and spirits industry has seen a surge in growth. Amidst this dynamic landscape, Averitt has carved out a distinctive role in supporting and enhancing the spirits supply chain. In an insightful interview with Todd Harrett, one of Averitt’s Transportation Specialists, we unravel the company's journey, its impact on the industry, and the unique strategies that set Averitt apart.
Bourbon
Let’s start, like Averitt did, with bourbon.
How has the bourbon industry evolved over the years, and what role has Averitt played?
Todd Harrett (TH): The bourbon industry has undergone significant transformations, with an exponential rise in producers. Kentucky has played a pivotal role, driven by substantial investments and its unique geographical advantages, such as locally sourced limestone water containing low iron. Because of its unique geography and historical production qualities, Kentucky bourbon commands a 20% valuation premium over aging spirits in other states. Kentucky is recognized as the birthplace for bourbon, which has the highest legal production standards in the world. It is the United States' only native spirit by law.
Within my first few years of working at Averitt, we talked about different industries that we could support based on our services. Right away we realized we could do that with a lot of the distilleries and their suppliers in Kentucky, because of the growth that the industry has experienced from craft producers (those under 50,000 barrels a year). We work closely with the innovative craft segment of the industry and larger heritage producers. There’s also a spirit of collaboration that is part of the distilling community and has been since the 1700-1800s, and that spirit is part of our culture. At Averitt, “we think in decades, not days.” We emphasize the development of a lasting relationship with these companies.

In the bourbon industry, we are constantly dealing with time sensitive production There's really key parts of the year where things really need to go off without a hitch so that we can have product the shelves when it needs to be there. One thing that Pinhook bourbon has done from the beginning is they focused on making quality, small batch, hard to find, rare Kentucky bourbon. We're a non distilling producer. So what Averitt does for us is picks up barrels, transports them from distiller to bottler on time, and that's just one less thing that we have to worry about. And so they coordinate everything with the warehouse and they take it completely off my hands. So at Averitt, we have what we go by to make good decisions and judgment called the Winner's Circle. It means that if something is good for our customers, if it's good for our associates, and it's good for our future, we do it. And here in Kentucky, bourbon is definitely about our future. To the relationship of working with Pinhook Bourbon, We at Averitt found Castle and Key. Castle and Key is a Kentucky spirits distillery here in Millville, Kentucky. Our relationship with Pinhook has been great over, you know, the past six to eight years. You know, we've done everything for them. We've distilled for them. We've aged front of them. We bottle for them. So, like, we've got to experience a lot of different, you know, parts of the business with them. And so when we started shipping out of barrels. We reached out to multiple different trucking companies, and Averitt really came through with the most competitive pricing. And the communication and customer service with them has just been above and beyond for us. Castle & Key went out and found this old abandoned building, Now, something that was a ruin is really just a wonderful treasure for the state to Kentucky. And we just wanna add to that. You know, we just wanna keep them healthy, move their bourbon, bring in their goods, do whatever they can so they can thrive. We use other bottling vendors such as Kentucky Artisan Distillery. What Averitt is able to do for us is transport barrels. Logistics is a big part of my job day to day. There's always things moving between either the distillery, the warehouses. We harvest the barrels for Pinhook. We then bottle those barrels into the glass we receive bottles are packaged up, sent down to the warehouse, Averitt is a key part in supplying and shipping those as soon as possible. Something I'm very excited about at Averitt is we are opening a three hundred and twenty four thousand square foot facility in Louisville, Kentucky. And sometimes one of the bottle is the distilleries don't have a place to put material. So we want to take away those bottlenecks, bourbon has the highest standards in the spirits industry for production. I draw that parallel sometimes because at Averitt, I feel we have the high standards in the transportation industry. So we are the bourbon of transportation. At Pinhook, the thing that we value most is partnerships and expanding them. So we went with the company that we trust the most, and that's Averitt.
Can you tell me about some of the history of the bourbon industry?
TH: A great example of the rich history entrenched in this industry would be the Kentucky Peerless story. They’re one of the original Distilled Spirits Producers (DSP); their DSP number is 50. The distillery, deeply rooted in family traditions, has a captivating narrative dating back to the Prohibition era. Mr. Henry Karver, a key figure in Peerless' lineage, played a crucial role in hiding and protecting barrels during Prohibition, and even provided the alcohol on prescriptions for the Walgreen brothers. They were voted the No. 1 craft distillery in the world in 2021; that honor, plus their history, really showcases the resilience and craftiness that defines the bourbon heritage.
